Transfering a vehicle

The Seller's Responsibilities

    • Sign the bill of sale portion of the UVIP and record the date and purchase price. 
    • Give the entire UVIP package to the buyer.
    • Complete and sign the Application for Transfer located on the back of the "vehicle portion" of the permit (registration) and give it to the buyer, write name and address of the buyer, record the mileage, the date of sale, and sign the form. 
    • Keep the "plate" portion of the ownership for your own use. You'll need this portion if you put your licence plates on another vehicle, or returned the old plates to the Ministry for cancellation and/or refund.
    • Remove and keep your licence plates as well as any other personal items.

NOTE: Failure to show the Used Vehicle Information Package to all interested buyers, and failure to give the package to the buyer are offences under the Highway Traffic Act. 

The Buyer's Responsibilities
 

    • Read the information included in the Used Vehicle Information Package carefully before you buy the vehicle. Check out a suspicious vehicle history. Further information may be obtained from the Ministry of Transportation Licensing Assistance Office at   416-235-2999 (Toronto) or 1-800-387-3445 (Rest of the Province).

Bring to the Driver and Vehicle Licence Office the following: 
 

  • Valid insurance information, 
  • The Safety Standards Certificate (if you intend to drive the vehicle immediately), 
  • The Application for Transfer (at the back of the vehicle portion of permit)
  • Your Ontario Driver's Licence or other identification, 
  • Plate portion of permit (if you want to use your existing licence plates) 
  • The Used Vehicle Information Package 
  • Sufficient funds for payment for retail sales tax, vehicle registration fees and, if required, new licence plates.
  • The Drive Clean Certificate (required whenever the Safety Standard Certificate is applicable)

Registration of the vehicle must be transferred within six days of buying a used vehicle.

The UVIP is not a warranty on the vehicle and does not guarantee against fraud. Please use caution when purchasing a vehicle. 

Transfer of registration will be refused if the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) is not presented or obtained at the moment of the transfer.
