During 1996 the Government of Ontario phased-in a new type of Driver's Licence
which combined the Driver information and the photo licence into a single document.
By 2001 all Driver licences in Ontario will be of this new type.

Driver Licences must be renew every 5 years on or before your birthday.
The fee for renewal is $75.00 (i.e. $15.00/year).

About 60 days before the expiration of your Driver's Licence, The Ministry of Transportation
sends regularly and Invitation to Renew (form No. SR-LD-95). The form contains information
about the renewal of your licence and if a new photo of you is required. On this form you
must answer three questions, sign and date it.

The Court does not accept as excuse for driving with a expired Driver's Licence,
that of  no having received the Invitation to Renew. It is the responsibility of the
driver to have  a valid Driver's Licence with him while driving.

When you renew your Driver's Licence or replace your photo, you will receive a
temporary Driver's Licence, valid for 90 days.  The permanent Licence will be
mailed to you within two weeks of the renewal.

Renewing while your Licence is still Valid

Bring to the Licence Office the following documents:

    • Your valid driver Licence
    •  The Invitation to Renew

If you did not receive the form or you lost it, the Licence Office will print
a new one for you.

Renewing after your Licence has expired

1 - If the Licence has been expired for less than One Year

Bring to the Licence Office the following documents:

    • Your expired  driver Licence
    •  The Invitation to Renew

If you did not receive the form or you lost it, the Licence Office will print
a new one for you.

2If the Licence has been expired for more than One Year but less than three years:

Bring the above documents to a Driver test Center

3 -If the Licence has been expired for more than  Three Years

Bring the above documents to a Driver test Center. You will be required to take
a written test and a road test.

Replacing your Photograph

The photo on your driver's Licence may be replaced at your request at any time.

Bring to the Licence Office the following documents:

    • Your valid driver Licence

The licence office  will print  the application which you must sign.
A $10.00 fee is applicable to this transaction.

Replacing Lost or Stolen Driver's Licence

Lost or Stolen Driver's  Licence can be replaced at a Licence Office  or at a Driver test Center

You are required to present two pieces of identification and pay a replacement
fee of $10.00

Replacing a Foreign  Driver's Licence

Drivers licensed in any Province in Canada, the United States, Japan or South Korea may
exchange their Licences for an Ontario D.L. at a  Driver test Center   without
a written or a road test. Full Licence fees must be paid.

Drivers licensed in any other jurisdiction  must  submit to  the Graduated Licensing
procedures for new drivers.  However, Drivers experience may be used to reduce the
time required by the Graduated Licensing system in order to obtain full licensing
privileges.
