How the Demerit system works:

1. Fully licensed drivers (New drivers must complete a minimum of twenty months under the Graduated Licensing Program before becoming fully licensed – no less than eight months as G-1 Driver and no less than 12 months as a G-2 Driver)

When you accumulate 6 demerit points, you will be inform about your record and urged to improve your driving habits.

When you accumulate 9 points, you may have to go to an interview to discuss your record and give reasons why your licence should not be suspended. You may also have to complete a driver re-examination. If you fail this test, your licence can be canceled. If you fail to attend an interview, or fail to give good reasons for keeping your licence, your     licence may be suspended

When you accumulate 15 points your licence is suspended for 30 days after you hand over your licence to
the Ministry of Transportation.

If you fail to surrender your licence to the Ministry, you may lose your licence for up to two years.

After the suspension, the number of points on your driver's record will be reduced to 7. Any extra points could again bring you to the interview level.

If you reach 15 points again, your licence will be suspended for six months.

2. New driver's (G1-M1 and G2-M2)

As a level one or level two driver, your licence will be suspended if you collect nine or more points during a two-year
period.

When you accumulate 2 points the Ministry will mail to you a warning.
When you accumulate 6 points the Ministry will call you for an interview
When you accumulate 9 demerit points, your licence is automatically suspended for 60 days from the time  you
hand it over to the Ministry of Transportation. You will be reminded of this by letter from the Ministry

If you fail to surrender your licence to the Ministry, you may lose your licence for up to two years.

When the suspension is over, the number of points will be reduced to 4. Any extra points will bring you to the
interview level. If you reach 9 points again your licence will be suspended for 6 months.
