Who needs an Ontario Driver's Licence

    • Every person living in Ontario, while driving a vehicle in the province, must posses a valid Ontario driver's licence.

To obtain a Driver's Licence in Ontario you must :

Be at least 16 years old.

See well enough to drive safely. (You must pass a vision test)

What is Graduated Licensing

It is a licensing system which allows new drivers to gain experience under conditions that
reduce the risk of collisions.

There are two levels in graduated licensing.

Any driver on these levels must follow all of the laws and regulations for general driving in
Ontario plus the special rules for each level.

Automobile Drivers

Level One - G1 Licence

This level lasts 12 months (this time can be reduced to eight months if the new driver successfully complete an approved driver education course)

The New Driver ...

MUST be accompanied by a fully licensed class G driver who has at least four years'
driving experience, sitting on the front passenger seat. If the accompanying driver is an Ontario Licensed Driver Instructor the four year experience does not apply.

No other person is allowed in the front seat whilst the new driver is driving.

The accompanying driver must have a blood alcohol content of less than .05 per cent ( in case he or she needs to take over the wheel)

MUST maintain a zero blood alcohol content while driving

MUST make sure that each person must have a seat belt so that his/her vehicle is not
overcrowded and every passenger is protected

MUST NOT drive between midnight and 5 a.m.

MUST NOT drive on Ontario's "400-series" highways or on high speed expressways
such s the Queen Elizabeth Way, the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Express Way in the Grater Toronto Area, The E.C. Row Expressway in Windsor and the Conestoga Parkway in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

NOTE: If the accompany driver is a driver instructor, the above restriction does not apply.

At the end of Level One, the new driver must pass a road test to move to Level Two.

Level Two - G2 Licence

This level lasts at least 12 months; The New Driver has now the experience and skills to drive at any time of day or night, without an accompanying driver.

The New Driver may also drive on any Ontario road.

Two important conditions still apply in Level Two:

The New Driver must not drink any alcohol if he/she is going to drive;

Each person in the vehicle must have a seat belt.

It will take at least 20 months from the time The New Driver start in Level One to the time he/she can take the Level Two test to earn full driving privileges. The final test measures The New Driver overall driving ability.

To further protect youth on our roads, effective September 1, 2005:

·         The number of young passengers that teen G2 drivers can carry will be limited from midnight to 5 a.m.

·         Initially, G2 drivers 19 or under can carry only one passenger aged 19 or under.

·         After the first six months, and until the G2 driver earns a full G licence or turns 20, they can carry only three passengers aged 19 or under.

These restrictions will not apply if the G2 driver is accompanied by a full "G" licensed driver (with at least four years driving experience) in the front seat, or if the passengers are immediate family members.

Pleas note: Thirty-one jurisdictions in Canada and the U.S. have some form of teenage passenger restrictions in effect.

Motorcycle Drivers

Level One - M1 Licence

In Level One, The New Driver can begin learning to drive motorcycles, with four conditions that help make her/his driving practice safer:

    • The New Driver must not drink any alcohol if she/he are going to drive;

    • The New Driver may only drive during daylight hours (one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset);

    • The New Driver must drive only on roads with speed limits of 80 km/h or less, except where there is no other route he/she can use. The New Driver may drive on highways 11,17, 61, 71, 101, 102, 144 and 655;

    • The New Driver may not carry any passengers.

Level One lasts at least 60 days, and the licence is valid for 90 days.

Before moving to Level Two, The New Driver must pass a road test, either as part of an approved motorcycle safety course, or at a Driver Test Centre.

Level Two - M2 Licence

In Level Two, which lasts 22 months (or 18 months if The New Driver complete an
approved motorcycle safety course in either level), she/he have the experience and skills
to carry a passenger and drive at any time of the day or night, on any Ontario road.

The New Driver must not drink any alcohol if he/she will be driving.

It will take at least 20 months from the time The New Driver start in Level One to the time he/she can take the Level Two test for full driving privileges. The final test measures The New Driver overall riding ability.

For All Drivers Licensed Previously in another Province or State

If The New Driver have a driver's licence from another country or from another Canadian
province or territory, that driving experience may help him/her get an Ontario driver's licence sooner. More information about graduated licensing is available by contacting Licensing Assistance at  (416) 235-2999 or by visiting a Driver Test Centre  or  by perusing Questions and Answers

The addresses of these centers are listed in the blue pages of your local telephone book.

Additional information about Graduated licenses will be found in the Driver's Handbook or The Motorcycle Handbook which are available for a small fee at the Vehicle and Drivers Licensing Offices
